Norse Mythology

Frost Giant at the finale of the 2014 JORVIK Viking FestivalVikings have always been intriguing characters and their impressive and convoluted mythology doesn’t disappoint.

Their myths, though epic in places – especially the creation, the beginning of the universe and Ragnarok, the clash of Gods which leads to the end of the world – also tend to focus on the everyday issues of 10th century life; family squabbles, jealous lovers, and even the creation of the three-tiered Viking class system of Thralls, Peasants and Jarls during the ‘Rigsthula’ or ‘Story of Rig’.

The myths they left behind help us to understand more about the world the Vikings lived in over 1000 years ago.
